Mission
My interest in woodworking came long before River Grain was created. When I was a kid I would always build something out of cardboard. Creating and planning how everything would work with popsicle sticks, glue, and tape simply because I loved creating. My grandfather recognized the passion I had and the willingness to learn. For years he had shown me things I had never done before and gave me the opportunity to work with my hands. When I was around twelve he had transformed his shed into a workshop and bought all the different tools we would need to begin woodworking together
We built many projects together from bird houses to wooden trucks and eventually realized we needed more room. Fortunately there was an old garage at my house. It was not much of a shop at the time with a broken garage door, holes in the walls, and the place was essentially abandoned, it had electricity and we knew it had potential. Together we fixed it up by clearing all the trash, building a work bench, and restoring the garage into a shop.
Unfortunately in the year 2023 my grandfather passed away, and all the tools he bought I inherited. My last months of high school were approaching and I knew I wanted to do something meaningful with the garage and the tools he had left behind. At the time I loved the live edge and being a craftsman, and I kept seeing epoxy pours and something about it stuck with me. I kept thinking about it over and over again because as a woodworker it had seemed so strange but looked absolutely beautiful.
During the school year I made a plan. I was going to start a business that summer selling epoxy boards. I spent my final months in school preparing and researching everything on epoxy to make sure I had everything I needed when high school ended. I made my first board just before the school year ended, I kept experimenting, learning, growing and improving off all my experiences. My sister helped me create the name by asking me carpentry terms and came up with River Grain.
Today River Grain is going strong expanding into bigger projects and hitting local markets. I am in college and do this on the side, waiting to do this full time. I have recruited my friend and taught him the craftsman skills when projects need extra help. My sister has helped me with creating my logo and branding as a graphic designer. I am always growing off of new projects and relationships I’ve made along the way, each product I make is a journey and piece to remember my grandfather as I still use his tools to this day.
The vision I have for River Grain is a luxury brand, doing custom pieces and working with only the best rare wood species in the world. When that time comes I want the brand to be recognizable, everything to feel high quality, and more of a process that happens once. More importantly, my grandfather served 27 years in the Canadian Air Force. Growing up, I heard many stories about his time in the military. As River Grain grows I want to use its success as the chance to give back to Canadian veterans. River Grain represents more than my love for woodworking. It honors the person who taught me, encouraged me, and gave me the tools to begin while giving something back to the community he was a part of for so many years.
River Grain started in an old garage with my grandfather, a collection of tools and a love for building.
Everything I have created today is built on that foundation-and we’re just getting started.
